Albright College

I attended a college night panel last night at Holy Name High School in Reading, PA last night. It was a very distinguished panel of some good friends. The panel included Darryl Jones from Gettysburg College, Bill Stahler from Kutztown University, Nettie Matz from Penn State University Berks Campus, and Jeff Dittman from Alvernia University. The night was coordinated by Josh Ditsky the college counselor at Holy Name who worked on the college admission side for almost 15 years before starting at Holy Name a few years ago.

About 150 people attended and I assure you they were entertained, well informed, and had a lot fun. When old admission friends get together things can get silly. I laughed until I cried and that is what makes my job fun. Another thing that makes my job fun is something that Darryl very eloquently stressed to our audience, the personal side of the admission process.

So let me get to the point of this post. Admission professionals are here to help you. We enjoy starting, having, and continuing dialogues about our schools and the admission process. We hope to help families through the process by anticipating questions, answering inquiries, and assisting students in tackling the challenges of the college search. Darryl told a great story that students who come up and talk to him after his open house speeches get business cards and if they follow-up with him after that open house, he will go to bat for them in admission committees. He told the crowd that if that particular student has equal chance of gaining admission to Gettysburg, he will make sure the student gets in because of the interest they showed in Gettysburg.

This fall when you are visiting colleges, attending college fairs, and meeting admission people at your high school; remember we are hoping to talk with you, not at you. Also, treat them like human beings and don't be intimidated to ask questions. If they remember you and like you, they might be able to help you down the line.

Good Luck!
