Some colleagues of mine approached me with concerns that students are posting on FACES about going to other schools and having money issues. They questioned whether we should take those posts down. My response was an absolute "No!". Choosing another college and having financial concerns are apart of many people's college search and selection. If students on the site decide to share this information on FACES, they have the ability and right to be able to do so.
This year Albright received over 6,200 applications and approximately 550 of those students will enroll in the fall. That means over 5,700 students, either by our choice, or theirs, decided to attend elsewhere. To those that are going to become Albrightians, we congratulate you and welcome you to our community. To those that decide to pursue their studies at a college or university that they feel fits their needs; we also congratulate you and wish you the best of luck with your choice. If all 6,200 applicants would have chosen Albright, we'd be in big trouble.
Students also have financial issues. Recent economic woes have forced finances to be an even larger part of the college selection than in past years. We've seen increases in financial appeals and students deciding to attend public schools or community college because of costs. Nationwide approximately 30% of students do not attend their first choice school and many times this is because of finances. We would hope that cost isn't the reason students decide to attend another school, but we realize that it will happen. Our goal is to keep that number as low as we can. My only recommendation is that if you have a financial concern that you contact the admission or financial aid office and not just write about it on FACES. For some families there may be something we can do, but you need to reach out and explain your situation.
It has been a great recruitment year for Albright despite the economy. This year's class may be the largest and most talented in the college's history. To those of you that will join us in August - welcome. To those of you that will not, good luck! And feel free to tell your story!
