With all of this talk about elections, politics, the economy, and limited funds in every possible media outlet, it comes as no surprise that many of the topics people are experiencing overall have found their way into my life.
It has been an interesting first few weeks here at Albright. One of classes, assignments, projects and papers…oh and not to mention more meetings than I would be able to count. As treasurer of the Student Government Association I have responsibility over our entire budget and help the government as a whole in allocating funds to a large number of campus organizations. Many facets that come along with this job I would equate to my first statement dealing with limited funds. We are always trying our hardest to give as much money as possible to organizations so that they may then pass on this opportunity with benefit to the student body.
As far as elections and politics go, I had the pleasure of being in DC last week for a conference (Also for SGA). There we were able to learn skills and techniques that will help us to make our operation the best they possibly can be. I’ve been to DC before and so didn’t have all that much interest in seeing the sights for a second time. I did however jump at the chance to call the Senator for PA, Bob Casey, and get tickets from his office to visit the senate, just as this whole wall-street bailout was being debated. Additionally, we decided to do a tour of DC on segways with a company uniquely named ‘Segs in the City.” The whole tour was awesome and I definitely will look into buying myself a segway to zip around campus on. Almost within sight of the end of the tour, I was zooming down Pennsylvania Avenue and attempted to go around some people. While I was doing this, my left wheel fell down into a flowerbed and I then proceeded to slide down the slippery bricks of the sidewalk on my hip, segway in hand. It was one of those moments where the world was in slow motion. I got up as quickly as possible and as I hope we all would do, laughed at myself.
This weekend is proving to be a very exciting one. I had the opportunity to meet with the board of trustees who held their semester meeting this weekend. I was also able to attend the President’s Council Dinner and talk further with trustees and influential individuals of the school and community.
On a closing note, I’d like to congratulate our football team on another exciting game and victory against FDU today!
Until next time…
